A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves your own natural hair from an area of thick growth to bald or thinning areas. It’s a permanent treatment.
First, your surgeon sterilizes and numbs your scalp with local anesthesia or sedation. Then they remove a strip of hair-bearing scalp or create individual grafts (using round-shaped punch grafts, micro-grafts and/or slit grafts). They then place these in the balding areas.
How the procedure works
A hair transplant takes healthy hair from one part of your scalp (usually the back or sides) and moves it to another area that is bald or thinning. The new hair follicles will then grow in the area, creating a fuller head of hair.
Your surgeon will sterilize the area and numb your scalp using a local anesthetic before the procedure starts. They’ll use either a scalpel to remove a strip of skin from the back of your head or a tool called a follicular unit extraction (FUE) tool to harvest individual hair follicles directly from your head.
Your doctor will then prepare the transplant site by creating tiny holes with needles or a blade. They will then place the follicles into these holes, covering them with gauze or bandages. You may experience some pain during this time, but most of the time you’ll feel fine. What to expect

After around six months, the transplanted and existing hair should be fully matured. At this point, most patients are satisfied with their results and can enjoy the benefits of a full head of natural-looking hair. Recovery
At this point, it’s common for the transplanted hair follicles to shed their original, natural colour in order to prepare themselves for new growth. However, this is not a sign of failure as it simply means that the hair is maturing and becoming healthy.
You will typically have ointment applied to the head, and instructions on how to wash your hair (don’t hold the showerhead directly over the site). It’s also important not to disturb the grafts by touching them. Your doctor will advise on all of these issues and how long you can expect the recovery period to last.
In most cases, any discomfort during the healing process is mild and can be managed with a regular rotation of over-the-counter pain medications. By the end of this period, you should be able to enjoy the cosmetic benefits of your new, full head of hair. It may take several months for the results to become apparent.
